About Derek Asamoah

My Story

My name is Derek Asamoah, and I am a Ghanaian professional footballer who plays as a forward for Haringey Borough. Throughout my career, I have had the incredible opportunity to play for clubs across England, France, Scotland, Bulgaria, and South Korea, showcasing my versatility and goal-scoring ability at every stage.

Club Career

Early Career
I developed my football skills at the renowned Protec Football Academy in North London. My early promise earned me opportunities at semi-professional clubs Hampton & Richmond Borough and later Slough Town, where I displayed my natural attacking instincts.

My performances caught the attention of Northampton Town, where I earned my first professional contract. I made an immediate impact, impressing in my debut season at Sixfields. Seeking new challenges, I moved to Mansfield Town, where I continued to develop my game before making the switch to Lincoln City.

A loan spell at Chester City saw me deliver one of my most prolific seasons, scoring nine goals in 18 matches and playing a crucial role in the team’s survival battle. My performances attracted further interest, and in 2006, I joined Shrewsbury Town, where I netted 10 goals in the league and helped the club reach the League Two play-offs.

Move to France and Beyond
In 2007, I made an exciting move to French Ligue 1 side OGC Nice. My time in France provided invaluable experience and exposure to top-level European football.

Following my stint in France, I returned to the UK with Hamilton Academical in the Scottish Premiership, where I tested myself against elite competition, including a debut against Celtic. Seeking new challenges, I then took my talents to Bulgaria, signing with Lokomotiv Sofia in 2009, where I continued to demonstrate my attacking prowess.

Success in South Korea
In November 2010, I embraced a new adventure by signing with South Korean giants Pohang Steelers. I quickly established myself as a key player, scoring on my debut and becoming an influential figure in the squad. My performances earned me a move to Daegu FC in 2013, where I continued to impress with my goal-scoring ability and technical skills.

Return to England
In 2014, I returned to English football, signing for Carlisle United. I made an immediate impact, scoring on my debut and becoming a fan favorite. One of my standout moments came in the League Cup against Liverpool, where I scored a crucial goal at Anfield in a thrilling contest.

My leadership and experience proved invaluable to the squad, and after a brief departure, I returned to Carlisle in 2016, adding more memorable performances to my name. I then joined Guiseley in 2017, further demonstrating my adaptability and professionalism.

Later Career
I continued to showcase my passion for the game by playing for Cheshunt, where I had the unique opportunity to share the pitch with my son. My goal-scoring ability remained sharp, making history as the record goal scorer at New Salamis before moving to Brighlingsea Regent in 2023, where I continued to make an impact.

International Career
My talent earned me a place in the Ghana national team in 2006, making my debut in friendlies against Japan and South Korea. My performances kept me in contention for major tournaments, and in 2011, I made a triumphant return to the national team. On 15 November 2011, I scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner against Gabon, securing a 2–1 victory for Ghana and cementing my place in the national team’s history.

My football journey has taken me across continents, from Europe to Asia, proving my ability to adapt, thrive, and deliver memorable moments on the pitch. My dedication, work ethic, and passion for the game have made me a respected figure in football, inspiring the next generation of players.
